Why the lights, not a green screen

A plain reaction test gives you one signal out of nowhere. The five-light sequence does something different: it builds tension for five seconds first, and then makes you sit through a pause you cannot predict. That waiting is where starts are actually lost — the hand tenses, anticipates, and goes early.

Which is why the drill keeps the real rule: click before the lights go out and the grid resets. You cannot farm a good number by guessing.

What makes a start faster

Rest the finger on the button before the sequence begins — travel time counts. Look at the lights, not at the timer. Do not blink through the pause. And do not chase a record for twenty attempts in a row: attention drops after a few starts and the numbers get worse, not better.

Hardware quietly adds its share too: a 60 Hz screen alone can cost 10–15 ms compared with 144 Hz or more.

The same reflex in shooters

A race start and a corner peek are the same task: a signal appears, the hand has to fire before the other guy’s does. The difference is that in a shooter you also have to find the target and put the crosshair on it, which adds its own hundred-odd milliseconds on top.

How does a real Formula 1 start work?

Five pairs of red lights come on one at a time, roughly a second apart. Once all five are lit, the race director holds them for an unpredictable moment — anywhere from about two tenths of a second to three seconds — and then kills all of them at once. The race starts when they go out, not when they come on. This drill copies that timing exactly.

What reaction time do F1 drivers actually have?

Around two tenths of a second at the lights, and the fastest launches sit meaningfully below that. Note that a driver measures the moment the car starts moving, not a mouse click — the clutch release is part of their number, so the comparison here is approximate.

What counts as a jump start?

In Formula 1 a reaction faster than 0.1 second is treated as a jump start, because no human reacts that quickly — it means the driver moved before the lights went out. This drill uses the same rule: anything under 100 ms is thrown out.

Why does the pause before lights-out change every time?

That is the whole point of the format. If the delay were fixed you would time it rather than react to it. Guessing is punished: clicking while the lights are still on resets the grid and locks the arena for a moment.

Is a keyboard faster than a mouse here?

Marginally, and mostly it depends on the switch and polling rate rather than the device type. The bigger variables are your monitor refresh rate and whether the hand was already resting on the button.

Does this help in shooters?

It trains the same simple-reaction pathway that decides who fires first when two players round a corner. What it does not train is target acquisition — for that use the drills with actual targets.
